The Origin of Halloween

The origin of what Americans call Halloween comes form a Celtic Celebration of Samhain. Samhain (pronounced sow-in) is a Druidic festival designed to celebrate harvest’s end. As Celtic folklore would have it, faeries are abundant during this season as they work to usher in winter.

The Celtic story is that on the night before the “New year” was when the boundary between the worlds of the dead and the living starting to become blurred. On Halloween night, OCt. 31st is when they celebrate Samhain. This is the day that the Celts believe ghosts from the past return to the earth and cause trouble like damaging crops.

The Celts also felt that during the time the spirits from the other world were present it aided Celtic priests in predicting their future. These people were dependent on the natural world which was fairly volatile. The prophecies became a source of direction as well as comfort throughout the dark, long and dangerous winter season.

The Celts were in costume during the Samhain celebration. They typically wore animal skins and heads and tried to tell each other’s fortunes. They made sacrifices and offerings to Celtic deities where they would build sacred bonfires and burn animals and crops.

Once the celebration was finished, the people relit the fires in their fireplaces which were put out earlier. They would relight the flames from the sacred bonfire which they believed would protect their household throughout the coming winter.
